Synastry Analysis

How we map the geometry between two charts

Synastry is the study of how one person's planetary positions interact with another's. StellarTies maps the multi-layered geometry created when two natal charts overlap — across all ten planets, Chiron, the Lunar Nodes, and the Ascendant.

Beyond a single compatibility score

No relationship is a single number. StellarTies breaks compatibility into four distinct dimensions:

Intimacy: Moon-Venus, Venus-Mars, Sun-Moon, and Pluto contacts — the emotional depth and physical resonance of the bond.

Flow: Sun-Jupiter, Venus-Jupiter, Mercury-Mercury — the natural ease and harmony between you.

Adventure: Jupiter-Uranus, Sun-Uranus — optimism, openness, and shared horizons.

Growth: Mars-Saturn, Sun-Saturn, Saturn-Pluto — transformative pressure that drives evolution. A high Growth score isn't a problem to solve; it's the engine that makes long-term partnerships meaningful.

Aspect detection: the geometry of connection

We calculate the exact angular distance between every planet in Chart A and every planet in Chart B, then identify the classical aspects:

Conjunction (0°): Fusion — the planets merge their energies.
Trine (120°): Natural flow — understanding comes without effort.
Sextile (60°): Opportunity — a gentler harmony that rewards engagement.
Square (90°): Tension — creative pressure that drives growth and chemistry.
Opposition (180°): Mirror — a push-pull dynamic requiring conscious balance.
Quincunx (150°): Adjustment — two energies that don't naturally "see" each other, requiring adaptation.

Orb-weighted scoring

Not all aspects are equally powerful. We use an orb-weighting system that reflects astrological reality:

Tight orbs (0°–2°): Core dynamics — these define the relationship. They receive the highest weight.
Medium orbs (2°–5°): Significant influences that shape the tone.
Wide orbs (5°–8°): Background flavors — felt but not primary drivers.

Personal planet pairs (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars) get wider orbs than outer planet contacts, reflecting their stronger felt impact. Generational aspects (e.g., Neptune-Pluto between people of similar ages) are automatically detected and flagged, so they don't inflate your scores with shared-cohort noise.

The composite chart: the relationship as its own entity

While synastry shows how you affect each other, the Composite Chart shows the relationship itself as a third entity. We calculate it using the mathematical midpoints between corresponding planets in both charts.

The composite chart has its own Sun, Moon, Venus, and Ascendant. We scan monthly transits against these composite points too — so when Saturn crosses your composite Sun, you'll see it in your forecast as a structural shift in the relationship's shared identity.

Deterministic logic, then narrative synthesis

Aspect detection and scoring are pure math — no language model involved. The orb calculations, category assignments, and generational flagging all use deterministic logic with zero randomness.

The language model enters only at the synthesis stage, when the scored aspect map is translated into a narrative that explains how, for example, a difficult Mars-Saturn square in communication is being supported by a harmonious Venus-Jupiter trine in shared values.

Synastry analysis is a tool for self-reflection and interpersonal awareness. It is not a predictive science and should not be used as the sole basis for major life decisions.
