A few times a year, group chats fill with the same shrug: "Sorry I'm late — Mercury's in retrograde." The phrase has escaped astrology entirely and become shorthand for any stretch where technology glitches, plans unravel, and texts land wrong. It's a fun scapegoat. It's also almost always described in a way that gets the actual astronomy backward, starting with the idea that a planet millions of miles away has thrown itself into reverse. It hasn't. Nothing out there is moving backward at all. What's really happening is stranger, more elegant, and completely calculable.

No, the planet is not moving backward

Start with the fact that always gets lost: Mercury never stops, never reverses, and never slows its orbit around the Sun. It keeps barreling along at about 29 miles per second, the fastest planet in the solar system, exactly as it always has.

What changes is our vantage point. We watch Mercury not from a fixed grandstand but from another moving object: Earth, itself circling the Sun. Because Mercury orbits closer to the Sun than we do, it travels a shorter, faster loop and laps us on the inside several times a year. During the stretch when Earth catches up to and overtakes Mercury, Mercury appears to pause, slide backward against the field of background stars, pause again, and then resume its normal direction.

You've seen the exact same illusion on the highway. Pull alongside a slower car and pass it, and for a moment that car seems to drift backward relative to you, even though it's rolling forward the whole time. It's not the car reversing; it's the geometry of one moving thing passing another. Mercury retrograde is that highway moment played out across the solar system. Astronomers call the real phenomenon apparent retrograde motion, and the load-bearing word is apparent.

How we know exactly when it starts and stops
